AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
451 AM PDT Fri Apr 11 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Cool and breezy conditions are expected today and
Saturday. Frost is possible in the colder spots Saturday morning.
High pressure builds in on Sunday and into next week with
temperatures warming to 10 to 15 degrees above normal.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGES:
- Cooler conditions and gusty north wind Friday and Saturday,
especially near shore.
- Possible frost Saturday morning in colder valleys of Trinity,
Lake and Mendocino counties.
- Warm temperatures return Sunday into early next week.
WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:
An upper level trough is moving into the pacific northwest and
multiple shortwaves are continuing to move around this. This is
gradually bringing cooler weather to the area. Highs will be
noticeably cooler today with highs ranging from the mid 50s along
the coast to the low 70s in southern Lake and Mendocino counties.
Breezy northwest winds are expected this afternoon along the coast
and over the higher terrain. Gusts of 15 to 25 mph are possible in
the windier spots. In Trinity county it looks like there could be
a few showers this afternoon and evening in the eastern portions,
although it is uncertain how widespread these will be. Most of
the showers will be east of the area or quickly move off to the
east. The north coast is expected to see some light drizzle
tonight. Areas farthest east and south are expected to see mainly
clear skies and the cool airmass will allow temperatures to drop
into the low to mid 30s. There is still some uncertainty about
exactly how far inland the low clouds will get, but it looks like
portions of interior northern Mendocino county and the colder
valleys of Lake county may see some frost. So have issued a frost
advisory for these areas.
Saturday afternoon high pressure starts to build into the area and
inland temperatures may warm a couple degrees over Friday.
Saturday night into Sunday fairly strong warm air advection is
expected and this will make it harder for valley locations to see
frost. It is sill possible in the colder spots, but for now have
temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s. Sunday afternoon is
expected to see temperatures 5 to 10 degrees warmer than Saturday
with the warmer valleys reach the low to mid 80s. This warm
airmass will make frost unlikely Monday morning. A few more
degrees of warming is expected by Monday afternoon. Tuesday
through Thursday warm and dry conditions are expected with some
slight fluctuations in the temperatures.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND DEVIATIONS:
This afternoon and evening some of the models are showing some
light showers in eastern Trinity county. The NBM isn`t showing
this, but went ahead and added a slight chance of showers.
Tonight at the coast the marine layer and a passing shortwave are
expected to produce some drizzle so have added that to the
forecast.
Tonight lowered the temperatures a degree or two below the NBM in
the inland valleys of Trinity, northeast Mendocino and Lake
counties. These areas are expected to remain clear with good
radiational cooling. This dropped temperatures cold enough to
warrant a frost advisory. The bigger challenge is Sunday morning.
There is good warm air advection overnight, but the valleys could
still radiate well and see some frost. The highest potential looks
like Covelo/Round Valley and north into Trinity county.
Sunday and Monday the challenge is how warm temperatures will get
in the inland valleys. The warmer valleys in Mendocino county are
showing a 50 to 60 percent chance of temperatures exceeding 85
degrees.
Tuesday through Thursday the ensembles are generally
showing a closed low undercutting the ridge and moving into
southern CA. The ensemble clusters are showing some differences in
the evolution of this pattern. The main difference on this is
expected to be how warm it will be. Very few of the ensemble
members are showing any precip. MKK

.AVIATION...Generally VFR conditions have developed at all TAF
terminal early this morning with mid to high level clouds streaming
northeastward across the area. Otherwise, a mix of VFR and MVFR
ceilings are expected to continue at KACV throughout the day today.
Winds are light from N-NW early this morning, becoming breezy N
winds around 10-15 kts, with stronger gusts, along the coastal
terminals after 18Z.
&&
.MARINE...Northerly winds will rapidly accelerate across the coastal
waters this morning as the pressure gradient tighten over the area.
Winds are expected to strengthen steadily through the weekend.
Strong to near gale force gusts and steep seas expected today. Gale
Force northerlies are forecast across the outer waters beginning
tonight and expanded to the northern inner waters by Saturday
afternoon. In addition, steep to very steep seas around 10 to 15
feet will build with the increasing winds across the coastal waters.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve Sunday through early
next week.
